This very rare desk veneered in european cherry shows typical design features of the 1950s. The carcase with its elegantly curved sides is supported by tapered legs. Having an open compartment on the back, shows that the desk is designed to be free-standing.
This high-quality piece of furniture has a central drawer that is flanked by two spacious compartments. Two convenient letter trays are located in the left compartment. Drawers and compartments can be locked via fine brass key sockets. The locks are keyed alike and the original key is present.
Due to its good preservation and professional, careful restoration in Sascha Hahn's workshop, the desk is in excellent condition: The finely grained cherry veneer has regained its original, reddish color again, which is brought to a silky-matt shine by a thin oil coating. The writing surface, which was previously covered with synthetic leather, has been replaced by a linoleum covering of a warm grey color.
This desk was designed in the early 1950s by Professor Dr. Hans Hartl, the chief designer of Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau. Hartl was a trained carpenter, studied interior design in Munich and initially worked as a furniture technician at Deutsche Werkstätten Munich. From 1933 onwards he worked as a freelancer for the Dresden company "Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau". After serving as an assistant to the renown architect Bruno Paul, he was was appointed "chief designer" at the Deutsche Werkstätten in 1946/47.
Another example of this desk can be seen in the LVR open-air museum Kommern (Inv.Nr .: 2007/151)
